But Lee and the band don’t let things get cluttered. This time out, the group thickens up its sound as guitars and synthetic tones often blend into a fuzzed out texture where it’s impossible to know how the blend of sonics was created. (“The last one was very mechanical and geometric and had a lot of rules on it,” Aubert said.) That goal was achieved, but fortunately, not at the expense of melody and songcraft. The group also wanted “Better Nature” to be loud and even a bit chaotic. What were we feeling at that moment and what happens here?” We wanted to make sure that when we were recording it and how the song goes and how we did it, it was almost going to be of that day. I think our moods and our thoughts were literally in the now (for “Better Nature”). ![]() “We just wanted this record to be very current, because the previous record was from a nostalgic point of view and a lot of nostalgic things were involved in it. “They were songs and they were fundamental, but they were almost built to kind of go in (to the studio) and move things around and change things and not get too attached to it, but just know it enough to know where the melodies are,” Aubert said. Working once again with Lee, Aubert brought in his song demos at a much more formative stage. So with the current album, “Better Nature,” Aubert and his bandmates took steps to keep things as free and in the moment as possible while recording in the studio. “And by the time we got to Jacknife (for recording), it was hard to, it would be demo-itis, where you get used to something and changing it is difficult.” “I think on that one I almost over-demoed,” Aubert said. But despite their best efforts to retain their spontaneity and creativity in the studio, Aubert did something that worked a bit against that goal. ![]() Writer(s): Brian Aubert, Nicole Monninger, Garret Lee, Christopher Guanlao, Joseph LesterLyrics powered by only time Aubert felt the band might have flirted with being over-prepared to record a studio album was with the third full-length album, 2012’s “Neck of the Wood.” The group did switch things up by choosing a new producer, Jacknife Lee, to produce the third album.
